धृतराष्ट्र बोले (Dhritrashtr said):
 
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः।
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत संजय॥१-१॥
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre
samavetā yuyutsavaḥ
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāś caiva
kim akurvata sañjaya

드리타라슈트라가 말했다.
오, 산자야여! 저 성스러운 들판 쿠루크쉐트라에 전쟁을 하러 모여든 판두의 아들들과 내 자식들이 어떻게 하고 있는가?

dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca — King Dhṛtarāṣṭra said; dharma-kṣetre — in the place of pilgrimage; kuru-kṣetre — in the place named Kurukṣetra; samavetāḥ — assembled; yuyutsavaḥ — desiring to fight; māmakāḥ — my party (sons); pāṇḍavāḥ — the sons of Pāṇḍu; ca — and; eva — certainly; kim — what; akurvata — did they do; sañjaya — O Sañjaya.

Translation: 
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu assembled in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukṣetra, desiring to fight, what did they do?



Bg 1.2
संजय बोले (Sanjay said):

दृष्ट्वा तु पाण्डवानीकं व्यूढं दुर्योधनस्तदा।
आचार्यमुपसंगम्य राजा वचनमब्रवीत्॥१-२॥
sañjaya uvāca
dṛṣṭvā tu pāṇḍavānīkaṁ
vyūḍhaṁ duryodhanas tadā
ācāryam upasaṅgamya
rājā vacanam abravīt

산자야가 말했다.
판다바의 군대가 포진해 있는 것을 보고 두료다나 왕자는 그의 스승에게 다가가 이렇게 말했습니다.

sañjayaḥ uvāca — Sañjaya said; dṛṣṭvā — after seeing; tu — but; pāṇḍava-anīkam — the soldiers of the Pāṇḍavas; vyūḍham — arranged in a military phalanx; duryodhanaḥ — King Duryodhana; tadā — at that time; ācāryam — the teacher; upasaṅgamya — approaching; rājā — the king; vacanam — words; abravīt — spoke.

Translation: 
Sañjaya said: O King, after looking over the army arranged in military formation by the sons of Pāṇḍu, King Duryodhana went to his teacher and spoke the following words.



Bg 1.3
पश्यैतां पाण्डुपुत्राणामाचार्य महतीं चमूम्।
व्यूढां द्रुपदपुत्रेण तव शिष्येण धीमता॥१-३॥
paśyaitāṁ pāṇḍu-putrāṇām
ācārya mahatīṁ camūm
vyūḍhāṁ drupada-putreṇa
tava śiṣyeṇa dhīmatā

오, 스승님! 판두의 아들들의 저 강한 군대를 보십시오. 스승님의 뛰어난 제자인 드루파다의 아들이 지휘하고 있습니다.

Word for word: 
paśya — behold; etām — this; pāṇḍu-putrāṇām — of the sons of Pāṇḍu; ācārya — O teacher; mahatīm — great; camūm — military force; vyūḍhām — arranged; drupada-putreṇa — by the son of Drupada; tava — your; śiṣyeṇa — disciple; dhī-matā — very intelligent.

Translation: 
O my teacher, behold the great army of the sons of Pāṇḍu, so expertly arranged by your intelligent disciple the son of Drupada.


Bg 1.4
अत्र शूरा महेष्वासा भीमार्जुनसमा युधि।
युयुधानो विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च महारथः॥१-४॥
atra śūrā maheṣv-āsā
bhīmārjuna-samā yudhi
yuyudhāno virāṭaś ca
drupadaś ca mahā-rathaḥ

저 군대에 비마 및 아르주나와 어깨를 나란히 견줄 수 있는 뛰어난 궁수들과 영웅들이 있습니다. 유유다나, 비라타, 그리고 대형전차를 모는 마하라타 드루파다,

atra — here; śūrāḥ — heroes; mahā-iṣu-āsāḥ — mighty bowmen; bhīma-arjuna — to Bhīma and Arjuna; samāḥ — equal; yudhi — in the fight; yuyudhānaḥ — Yuyudhāna; virāṭaḥ — Virāṭa; ca — also; drupadaḥ — Drupada; ca — also; mahā-rathaḥ — great fighter.

Translation: 
Here in this army are many heroic bowmen equal in fighting to Bhīma and Arjuna: great fighters like Yuyudhāna, Virāṭa and Drupada.



Bg 1.5
धृष्टकेतुश्चेकितानः काशिराजश्च वीर्यवान्।
पुरुजित्कुन्तिभोजश्च शैब्यश्च नरपुङ्गवः॥१-५॥ 
dhṛṣṭaketuś cekitānaḥ
kāśirājaś ca vīryavān
purujit kuntibhojaś ca
śaibyaś ca nara-puṅgavaḥ

드리슈타케투, 체키타나, 그리고 카시의 용맹스러운 왕, 푸루지트, 쿤티보자, 그리고 뛰어난 인물인 사이비야,

Translation: 
There are also great, heroic, powerful fighters like Dhṛṣṭaketu, Cekitāna, Kāśirāja, Purujit, Kuntibhoja and Śaibya.



Bg 1.6
युधामन्युश्च विक्रान्त उत्तमौजाश्च वीर्यवान्।
सौभद्रो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्व एव महारथाः॥१-६॥ 
yudhāmanyuś ca vikrānta
uttamaujāś ca vīryavān
saubhadro draupadeyāś ca
sarva eva mahā-rathāḥ

힘센 유다만유와 용감한 우타마우자스, 수바드라의 아들과 드라우파디의 아들들, 이 모두가 하나같이 거대한 전차를 타고 있습니다.

Translation: 
There are the mighty Yudhāmanyu, the very powerful Uttamaujā, the son of Subhadrā and the sons of Draupadī. All these warriors are great chariot fighters.



Bg 1.7
अस्माकं तु विशिष्टा ये तान्निबोध द्विजोत्तम।
नायका मम सैन्यस्य संज्ञार्थं तान्ब्रवीमि ते॥१-७॥ 
asmākaṁ tu viśiṣṭā ye
tān nibodha dvijottama
nāyakā mama sainyasya
saṁjñārthaṁ tān bravīmi te

그러나 오, 거듭 태어난 자들 가운데 가장 뛰어난 분이시여! 우리 가운데 가장 빼어난 분들, 저의 군대의 최고인 자들을 아셔야 합니다. 주요 장수의 이름들을 말씀 드리겠습니다.

Word for word: 
asmākam — our; tu — but; viśiṣṭāḥ — especially powerful; ye — who; tān — them; nibodha — just take note of, be informed; dvija-uttama — O best of the brāhmaṇas; nāyakāḥ — captains; mama — my; sainyasya — of the soldiers; saṁjñā-artham — for information; tān — them; bravīmi — I am speaking; te — to you.

Translation: 
But for your information, O best of the brāhmaṇas, let me tell you about the captains who are especially qualified to lead my military force.



Bg 1.8
भवान्भीष्मश्च कर्णश्च कृपश्च समितिंजयः।
अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सौमदत्तिस्तथैव च॥१-८॥ 
bhavān bhīṣmaś ca karṇaś ca
kṛpaś ca samitiṁ-jayaḥ
aśvatthāmā vikarṇaś ca
saumadattis tathaiva ca

스승님 자신을 비롯하여 비슈마, 카르나, 그리고 언제나 전쟁에 승리하는 크리파, 아슈바타마와 비카르나, 또한 소마다타의 아들인 자야드라타,

bhavān — your good self; bhīṣmaḥ — Grandfather Bhīṣma; ca — also; karṇaḥ — Karṇa; ca — and; kṛpaḥ — Kṛpa; ca — and; samitim-jayaḥ — always victorious in battle; aśvatthāmā — Aśvatthāmā; vikarṇaḥ — Vikarṇa; ca — as well as; saumadattiḥ — the son of Somadatta; tathā — as well as; eva — certainly; ca — also.

Translation: 
There are personalities like you, Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Aśvatthāmā, Vikarṇa and the son of Somadatta called Bhūriśravā, who are always victorious in battle.



Bg 1.9
अन्ये च बहवः शूरा मदर्थे त्यक्तजीविताः।
नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः॥१-९॥ 
anye ca bahavaḥ śūrā
mad-arthe tyakta-jīvitāḥ
nānā-śastra-praharaṇāḥ
sarve yuddha-viśāradāḥ

그 밖에 저를 위하여 목숨을 내놓은 많은 영웅들이 여러가지 무기들로 무장하고는 싸우고 있습니다. 모두들 싸움에 능한 자들입니다.

Word for word: 
anye — others; ca — also; bahavaḥ — in great numbers; śūrāḥ — heroes; mat-arthe — for my sake; tyakta-jīvitāḥ — prepared to risk life; nānā — many; śastra — weapons; praharaṇāḥ — equipped with; sarve — all of them; yuddha-viśāradāḥ — experienced in military science.

Translation: 
There are many other heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. All of them are well equipped with different kinds of weapons, and all are experienced in military science.



Bg 1.10
अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम्।
पर्याप्तं त्विदमेतेषां बलं भीमाभिरक्षितम्॥१-१०॥ 
aparyāptaṁ tad asmākaṁ
balaṁ bhīṣmābhirakṣitam
paryāptaṁ tv idam eteṣāṁ
balaṁ bhīmābhirakṣitam

비슈마가 이끄는 우리 군대는 부족하지만, 비마가 이끄는 저 쪽 군대는 넉넉합니다.

Word for word: 
aparyāptam — immeasurable; tat — that; asmākam — of ours; balam — strength; bhīṣma — by Grandfather Bhīṣma; abhirakṣitam — perfectly protected; paryāptam — limited; tu — but; idam — all this; eteṣām — of the Pāṇḍavas; balam — strength; bhīma — by Bhīma; abhirakṣitam — carefully protected.

Translation: 
Our strength is immeasurable, and we are perfectly protected by Grandfather Bhīṣma, whereas the strength of the Pāṇḍavas, carefully protected by Bhīma, is limited.



Bg 1.11
अयनेषु च सर्वेषु यथाभागमवस्थिताः।
भीष्ममेवाभिरक्षन्तु भवन्तः सर्व एव हि॥१-११॥ 
ayaneṣu ca sarveṣu
yathā-bhāgam avasthitāḥ
bhīṣmam evābhirakṣantu
bhavantaḥ sarva eva hi

그러므로 그대들 모두는 제자리를 지키면서 오직 비슈마를 보호하여라.

Word for word: 
ayaneṣu — in the strategic points; ca — also; sarveṣu — everywhere; yathā-bhāgam — as differently arranged; avasthitāḥ — situated; bhīṣmam — unto Grandfather Bhīṣma; eva — certainly; abhirakṣantu — should give support; bhavantaḥ — you; sarve — all respectively; eva hi — certainly.

Translation: 
All of you must now give full support to Grandfather Bhīṣma, as you stand at your respective strategic points of entrance into the phalanx of the army.



Bg 1.12
तस्य संजनयन्हर्षं कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः।
सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान्॥१-१२॥ 
tasya sañjanayan harṣaṁ
kuru-vṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ
siṁha-nādaṁ vinadyoccaiḥ
śaṅkhaṁ dadhmau pratāpavān

이에 카우라바들의 맏아들인 노장 비슈마는 두료다나의 힘을 북돋워 주려고, 사자처럼 포효하며 자신의 소라나팔을 불었습니다.

Word for word: 
tasya — his; sañjanayan — increasing; harṣam — cheerfulness; kuru-vṛddhaḥ — the grandsire of the Kuru dynasty (Bhīṣma); pitāmahaḥ — the grandfather; siṁha-nādam — roaring sound, like that of a lion; vinadya — vibrating; uccaiḥ — very loudly; śaṅkham — conchshell; dadhmau — blew; pratāpa-vān — the valiant.

Translation: 
Then Bhīṣma, the great valiant grandsire of the Kuru dynasty, the grandfather of the fighters, blew his conchshell very loudly, making a sound like the roar of a lion, giving Duryodhana joy.



Bg 1.13
ततः शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च पणवानकगोमुखाः।
सहसैवाभ्यहन्यन्त स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत्॥१-१३॥ 
tataḥ śaṅkhāś ca bheryaś ca
paṇavānaka-gomukhāḥ
sahasaivābhyahanyanta
sa śabdas tumulo 'bhavat

그러자 뒤를 이어 소라나팔과 큰북, 심벌즈, 작은 북과 나팔소리가 터져 나왔습니다. 그 소리는 굉장하였습니다.

Translation: 
After that, the conchshells, drums, bugles, trumpets and horns were all suddenly sounded, and the combined sound was tumultuous.



Bg 1.14
ततः श्वेतैर्हयैर्युक्ते महति स्यन्दने स्थितौ।
माधवः पाण्डवश्चैव दिव्यौ शङ्खौ प्रदध्मतुः॥१-१४॥ 
tataḥ śvetair hayair yukte
mahati syandane sthitau
mādhavaḥ pāṇḍavaś caiva
divyau śaṅkhau pradadhmatuḥ

그러자 이번에는 마다바(크리슈나)와 판다바(아르주나) 역시 백마가 이끄는 거대한 전차에 않아서 천상의 소라나팔을 불었습니다.

Translation: 
On the other side, both Lord Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, stationed on a great chariot drawn by white horses, sounded their transcendental conchshells.



Bg 1.15
पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनञ्जयः।
पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः॥१-१५॥ 
pāñcajanyaṁ hṛṣīkeśo
devadattaṁ dhanañjayaḥ
pauṇḍraṁ dadhmau mahā-śaṅkhaṁ
bhīma-karmā vṛkodaraḥ

흐리쉬케사(크리슈나)는 판차자니야를 불었고, 다난자야(아르주나)는 데바닷타를 불었습니다. 무시무시한 괴물 비마는 큰 나팔 파운드라를 불었습니다.

Translation: 
Lord Kṛṣṇa blew His conchshell, called Pāñcajanya; Arjuna blew his, the Devadatta; and Bhīma, the voracious eater and performer of herculean tasks, blew his terrific conchshell, called Pauṇḍra.



Bg 1.16-18
अनन्तविजयं राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च सुघोषमणिपुष्पकौ॥१-१६॥

काश्यश्च परमेष्वासः शिखण्डी च महारथः।
धृष्टद्युम्नो विराटश्च सात्यकिश्चापराजितः॥१-१७॥
 
द्रुपदो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः पृथिवीपते।
सौभद्रश्च महाबाहुः शङ्खान्दध्मुः पृथक्पृथक्॥१-१८॥  
anantavijayaṁ rājā
kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca
sughoṣa-maṇipuṣpakau
kāśyaś ca parameṣv-āsaḥ
śikhaṇḍī ca mahā-rathaḥ
dhṛṣṭadyumno virāṭaś ca
sātyakiś cāparājitaḥ
drupado draupadeyāś ca
sarvaśaḥ pṛthivī-pate
saubhadraś ca mahā-bāhuḥ
śaṅkhān dadhmuḥ pṛthak pṛthak

쿤티의 아들 유디슈티라 왕자는 아난타비자야를 불었고, 나쿨라와 사하데바는 수고샤와 마니푸슈카를 불었습니다.

탁월한 궁수인 카시 왕, 거대한 전차를 모는 시칸디, 드리슈타듐나와 비라타 굴복을 모르는 사티야키,

드루파다와 드라우파디의 아들들, 오, 대지의 주인이시여! 그리고 무장을 갖춘 수바드라의 아들, 그들 모두 각자의 소라나팔을 불었습니다.

Translation: 
King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, blew his conchshell, the Ananta-vijaya, and Nakula and Sahadeva blew the Sughoṣa and Maṇipuṣpaka. That great archer the King of Kāśī, the great fighter Śikhaṇḍī, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Virāṭa, the unconquerable Sātyaki, Drupada, the sons of Draupadī, and the others, O King, such as the mighty-armed son of Subhadrā, all blew their respective conchshells.



Bg 1.19
स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणां हृदयानि व्यदारयत्।
नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलो व्यनुनादयन्॥१-१९॥ 
sa ghoṣo dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ
hṛdayāni vyadārayat
nabhaś ca pṛthivīṁ caiva
tumulo 'bhyanunādayan

그 우레와 같은 소리는 하늘과 땅을 진동시키면서 드리타라슈트라 군대의 간담을 서늘케 하였습니다.

Translation: 
The blowing of these different conchshells became uproarious. Vibrating both in the sky and on the earth, it shattered the hearts of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.



Bg 1.20-22
अथ व्यवस्थितान्दृष्ट्वा धार्तराष्ट्रान्कपिध्वजः।
प्रवृत्ते शस्त्रसंपाते धनुरुद्यम्य पाण्डवः॥१-२०॥ 

हृषीकेशं तदा वाक्यमिदमाह महीपते। 

अर्जुन बोले (Arjun Said):
सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये रथं स्थापय मेऽच्युत॥१-२१॥

यावदेतान्निरिक्षेऽहं योद्‌धुकामानवस्थितान्।
कैर्मया सह योद्धव्यमस्मिन् रणसमुद्यमे॥१-२२॥

dhārtarāṣṭrān kapi-dhvajaḥ
pravṛtte śastra-sampāte
dhanur udyamya pāṇḍavaḥ
hṛṣīkeśaṁ tadā vākyam
idam āha mahī-pate

senayor ubhayor madhye
rathaṁ sthāpaya me 'cyuta
yāvad etān nirīkṣe 'haṁ
yoddhu-kāmān avasthitān
kair mayā saha yoddhavyam

그때 포진을 한 드리타라슈트라 군사들이 막 무기의 안전장치를 푸는 것을 보고서, 오, 대지의 왕이시여! 원숭이 신의 깃발을 세운 판다바(아르주나)는 자신의 활을 들고 흐리쉬케사에게 이렇게 말했습니다. "오, 아츄타(크리슈나)시여, 저의 전차를 두 군대 사이로 몰고 가 주십시오. 그리하여 싸우고자 여기에 서 있는 군사들을 제 눈으로 보게 하시고, 이 싸움터에서 맞서 싸워야 할 사람들을 알게 해주십시오.

arjunaḥ uvāca — Arjuna said; senayoḥ — of the armies; ubhayoḥ — both; madhye — between; ratham — the chariot; sthāpaya — please keep; me — my; acyuta — O infallible one; yāvat — as long as; etān — all these; nirīkṣe — may look upon; aham — I; yoddhu-kāmān — desiring to fight; avasthitān — arrayed on the battlefield; kaiḥ — with whom; mayā — by me; saha — together; yoddhavyam — have to fight; asmin — in this; raṇa — strife; samudyame — in the attempt.

Translation: 
At that time Arjuna, the son of Pāṇḍu, seated in the chariot bearing the flag marked with Hanumān, took up his bow and prepared to shoot his arrows. O King, after looking at the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra drawn in military array, Arjuna then spoke to Lord Kṛṣṇa these words.
Arjuna said: O infallible one, please draw my chariot between the two armies so that I may see those present here, who desire to fight, and with whom I must contend in this great trial of arms.



Bg 1.23
योत्स्यमानानवेक्षेऽहं य एतेऽत्र समागताः।
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्बुद्धेर्युद्धे प्रियचिकीर्षवः॥१-२३॥ 
yotsyamānān avekṣe 'haṁ
ya ete 'tra samāgatāḥ
dhārtarāṣṭrasya durbuddher
yuddhe priya-cikīrṣavaḥ

악한 마음을 지닌 드리타라슈트라의 아들들을 돕기 위해 전쟁에 나선 사람들을 저는 자세히 보고 싶습니다."

Bg 1.24-25
संजय बोले (Sanjay said):

एवमुक्तो हृषीकेशो गुडाकेशेन भारत।
सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये स्थापयित्वा रथोत्तमम्॥१-२४॥

भीष्मद्रोणप्रमुखतः सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम्।
उवाच पार्थ पश्यैतान्समवेतान्कुरूनिति॥१-२५॥
sañjaya uvāca
evam ukto hṛṣīkeśo
guḍākeśena bhārata
senayor ubhayor madhye
sthāpayitvā rathottamam
bhīṣma-droṇa-pramukhataḥ
sarveṣāṁ ca mahī-kṣitām

산자야가 말했다.
오, 바라타(드리타라슈트라)시여! 구다케사(아르주나)가 이렇게 말하자 흐리쉬케사는 그 장엄한 전차를 두 진영 사이에 세운 다음, 비슈마와 드로나 그리고 대지의 모든 통치자들 앞에서 말했습니다. "오, 파르타(아르주나)여! 저기에 모여있는 쿠루족을 보아라."

Sañjaya said: O descendant of Bharata, having thus been addressed by Arjuna, Lord Kṛṣṇa drew up the fine chariot in the midst of the armies of both parties.
In the presence of Bhīṣma, Droṇa and all the other chieftains of the world, the Lord said, "Just behold, Pārtha, all the Kurus assembled here."



Bg 1.26-27
तत्रापश्यत्स्थितान्पार्थः पितॄनथ पितामहान्।
आचार्यान्मातुलान्भ्रातॄन्पुत्रान्पौत्रान्सखींस्तथा॥१-२६॥

श्वशुरान्सुहृदश्चैव सेनयोरुभयोरपि।  
tatrāpaśyat sthitān pārthaḥ
pitṝn atha pitāmahān
ācāryān mātulān bhrātṝn
putrān pautrān sakhīṁs tathā
śvaśurān suhṛdaś caiva
senayor ubhayor api

그러자 파르타(아르주나)는 서로 마주 보고 정렬해 있는 아버지들과 할아버지들, 스승들, 외삼촌들, 형제들, 아들들, 손자들, 장인들과 친구들을 보았습니다.

Bg 1.27-28
तान्समीक्ष्य स कौन्तेयः सर्वान्बन्धूनवस्थितान्॥१-२७॥ 

कृपया परयाविष्टो विषीदन्निदमब्रवीत्। 
tān samīkṣya sa kaunteyaḥ
sarvān bandhūn avasthitān
kṛpayā parayāviṣṭo
viṣīdann idam abravīt

카운테야(아르주나)는 이렇게 친척들이 포진해 맞서 있는 것을 보고 깊은 연민에 잠겨 슬픈 목소리로 이렇게 말했습니다.

अर्जुन बोले (Arjun Said):
 
दृष्ट्वेमं स्वजनं कृष्ण युयुत्सुं समुपस्थितम्॥१-२८॥

सीदन्ति मम गात्राणि मुखं च परिशुष्यति।
वेपथुश्च शरीरे मे रोमहर्षश्च जायते॥१-२९॥
 
गाण्डीवं स्रंसते हस्तात्त्वक्चैव परिदह्यते। 
arjuna uvāca
dṛṣṭvemaṁ sva-janaṁ kṛṣṇa
yuyutsuṁ samupasthitam
sīdanti mama gātrāṇi
mukhaṁ ca pariśuṣyati
vepathuś ca śarīre me
roma-harṣaś ca jāyate
gāṇḍīvaṁ sraṁsate hastāt
tvak caiva paridahyate

아르주나가 말했다.
오, 크리슈나시여! 친척들이 서로 마주하여 전쟁을 일으키려고 하는 것을 보니, 저의 사지는 맥이 풀리고 입은 마르고 몸은 떨리고 머리카락이 곤두섭니다.
활 간디바는 손에서 미끄러지고 저의 살갖은 화끈거리며 타들어 갑니다.

Arjuna said: My dear Kṛṣṇa, seeing my friends and relatives present before me in such a fighting spirit, I feel the limbs of my body quivering and my mouth drying up.
My whole body is trembling is slipping from my hand, and my skin is burning.



Bg 1.30-32
न च शक्नोम्यवस्थातुं भ्रमतीव च मे मनः॥१-३०॥ 
 

निमित्तानि च पश्यामि विपरीतानि केशव।
न च श्रेयोऽनुपश्यामि हत्वा स्वजनमाहवे॥१-३१॥

न काङ्क्षे विजयं कृष्ण न च राज्यं सुखानि च।
na ca śaknomy avasthātuṁ
bhramatīva ca me manaḥ
nimittāni ca paśyāmi
viparītāni keśava
na ca śreyo 'nupaśyāmi
hatvā sva-janam āhave
na kāṅkṣe vijayaṁ kṛṣṇa
na ca rājyaṁ sukhāni ca

저는 더이상 버티고 서 있을 수 없으며, 저의 마음은 혼란으로 요동칩니다. 그리고 오, 케샤바(크리슈나)시여! 전쟁터에서 친척들을 죽이는데 무슨 좋은 일이 있겠습니까? 저에게는 불길한 징조만이 보입니다. 오, 크리슈나시여! 저는 승리도 왕국도 기쁨도 원치 않습니다.

I am now unable to stand here any longer. I am forgetting myself, and my mind is reeling. I see only causes of misfortune, O Kṛṣṇa, killer of the Keśī demon.
I do not see how any good can come from killing my own kinsmen in this battle, nor can I, my dear Kṛṣṇa, desire any subsequent victory, kingdom, or happiness.



Bg 1.32-36
किं नो राज्येन गोविन्द किं भोगैर्जीवितेन वा॥१-३२॥ 

येषामर्थे काङ्क्षितं नो राज्यं भोगाः सुखानि च।
त इमेऽवस्थिता युद्धे प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा धनानि च॥१-३३॥

आचार्याः पितरः पुत्रास्तथैव च पितामहाः।
मातुलाः श्वशुराः पौत्राः श्यालाः संबन्धिनस्तथा॥१-३४॥
 
एतान्न हन्तुमिच्छामि घ्नतोऽपि मधुसूदन।
अपि त्रैलोक्यराज्यस्य हेतोः किं नु महीकृते॥१-३५

निहत्य धार्तराष्ट्रान्नः का प्रीतिः स्याज्जनार्दन।

오, 고빈다(크리슈나)시여! 왕국을 얻어 무엇을 하겠습니까? 쾌락이나 삶이 무슨 소용이 있겠습니까?
우리가 왕국과 쾌락과 즐거움을 구하는 것이 저들을 위해서 인데, 스승들, 아버지들, 할아버지들과 손자들, 외삼촌들, 장인들, 손자들, 처남들과 여러 친척들이 생명과 재산을 내던지고 여기에 서 있습니다.
오, 마두수다나(크리슈나)시여! 저들이 저를 죽인다 할지라도 저는 저들을 죽이고 싶지 않습니다. 삼계의 통치권을 얻을 수 있다고 해도 그러한데, 하물며 이세상의 지배를 위해서니요!
오, 자나르다나(크리슈나)시여! 드리타라슈트라의 아들들을 죽인다고 해서 우리에게 어떤 즐거움이 있겠습니까?

O Govinda, of what avail to us are a kingdom, happiness or even life itself when all those for whom we may desire them are now arrayed on this battlefield? O Madhusūdana, when teachers, fathers, sons, grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law and other relatives are ready to give up their lives and properties and are standing before me, why should I wish to kill them, even though they might otherwise kill me? O maintainer of all living entities, I am not prepared to fight with them even in exchange for the three worlds, let alone this earth. What pleasure will we derive from killing the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra?



Bg 1.36-37
पापमेवाश्रयेदस्मान्हत्वैतानाततायिनः॥१-३६॥ 

तस्मान्नार्हा वयं हन्तुं धार्तराष्ट्रान्स्वबान्धवान्।
स्वजनं हि कथं हत्वा सुखिनः स्याम माधव॥१-३७॥
 
pāpam evāśrayed asmān
hatvaitān ātatāyinaḥ
tasmān nārhā vayaṁ hantuṁ
dhārtarāṣṭrān sa-bāndhavān
sva-janaṁ hi kathaṁ hatvā

저 침략자들을 죽이면 우리에게 죄만 따라올 뿐입니다. 그러므로 우리는 우리의 친척들인 저 드리타라슈트라의 아들들을 죽이지 않는 편이 나을 것입니다. 친척들을 죽이고서, 오, 마다바(크리슈나)시여 우리가 어떻게 행복할 수 있겠습니까?

Bg 1.37-39
यद्यप्येते न पश्यन्ति लोभोपहतचेतसः। 
कुलक्षयकृतं दोषं मित्रद्रोहे च पातकम्॥१-३८॥
 
कथं न ज्ञेयमस्माभिः पापादस्मान्निवर्तितुम्।
कुलक्षयकृतं दोषं प्रपश्यद्भिर्जनार्दन॥१-३९॥
yady apy ete na paśyanti
lobhopahata-cetasaḥ
kula-kṣaya-kṛtaṁ doṣaṁ
mitra-drohe ca pātakam
kathaṁ na jñeyam asmābhiḥ
pāpād asmān nivartitum
kula-kṣaya-kṛtaṁ doṣaṁ
prapaśyadbhir janārdana

비록 저들의 마음이 탐욕에 흐려져서, 가문의 대를 끊는것이 악행인줄 모르고, 친구들을 배반하는 것이 죄악인 줄 모른다 할지라도, 오, 자나르다나시여! 가문을 끊는 것이 악행임을 분명히 알고 있는 우리라도 죄를 짓는 이 행위를 그만두어야 하지 않겠습니까?

कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्माः सनातनाः।
धर्मे नष्टे कुलं कृत्स्नमधर्मोऽभिभवत्युत॥१-४०॥ 
kula-kṣaye praṇaśyanti
kula-dharmāḥ sanātanāḥ
dharme naṣṭe kulaṁ kṛtsnam
adharmo 'bhibhavaty uta

가문이 파괴되면 그 가문의 오랜 다르마들이 사라지게 됩니다. 다르마들이 사라지면 아다르마(불경)가 온 집안을 사로잡습니다.

अधर्माभिभवात्कृष्ण प्रदुष्यन्ति कुलस्त्रियः।
स्त्रीषु दुष्टासु वार्ष्णेय जायते वर्णसंकरः॥१-४१॥ 
adharmābhibhavāt kṛṣṇa
praduṣyanti kula-striyaḥ
strīṣu duṣṭāsu vārṣṇeya
jāyate varṇa-saṅkaraḥ

아다르마가 널리 퍼지면, 오, 크리슈나시여! 집안의 여자들이 더럽혀집니다. 여자들이 더럽혀지면 카스트들이 뒤섞일 것입니다. 오, 바르슈네야시여!

Bg 1.42
संकरो नरकायैव कुलघ्नानां कुलस्य च।
पतन्ति पितरो ह्येषां लुप्तपिण्डोदकक्रियाः॥१-४२॥ 
saṅkaro narakāyaiva
kula-ghnānāṁ kulasya ca
patanti pitaro hy eṣāṁ
lupta-piṇḍodaka-kriyāḥ

카스트들이 뒤섞이면 가문의 사람들과 가문의 파괴자들 역시 지옥으로 떨어지게 됩니다. 조상에게 드리는 제사가 끊겨 그들이 몰락할 것이기 때문입니다.

दोषैरेतैः कुलघ्नानां वर्णसंकरकारकैः।
उत्साद्यन्ते जातिधर्माः कुलधर्माश्च शाश्वताः॥१-४३॥ 
doṣair etaiḥ kula-ghnānāṁ
varṇa-saṅkara-kārakaiḥ
utsādyante jāti-dharmāḥ
kula-dharmāś ca śāśvatāḥ

저 가문 파괴자들이 저지른 악행들은 가문은 물론 영원한 카스트의 다르마들의 파괴합니다.

नरकेऽनियतं वासो भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम॥१-४४॥ 
utsanna-kula-dharmāṇāṁ
manuṣyāṇāṁ janārdana
narake niyataṁ vāso
bhavatīty anuśuśruma

오, 자나르다나시여! 다르마들이 파괴된 가문의 사람들은 지옥에 살지 않으면 안된다는 말을 들었습니다.

यद्राज्यसुखलोभेन हन्तुं स्वजनमुद्यताः॥१-४५॥ 
aho bata mahat pāpaṁ
kartuṁ vyavasitā vayam
yad rājya-sukha-lobhena
hantuṁ sva-janam udyatāḥ

아아! 왕국을 차지하려는 탐욕으로 우리는 지금 친척들을 죽이는 전쟁을 하려하고 있습니다. 이것은 큰 죄악입니다.

aho — alas; bata — how strange it is; mahat — great; pāpam — sins; kartum — to perform; vyavasitāḥ — have decided; vayam — we; yat — because; rājya-sukha-lobhena — driven by greed for royal happiness; hantum — to kill; sva-janam — kinsmen; udyatāḥ — trying.

Translation: 
Alas, how strange it is that we are preparing to commit greatly sinful acts. Driven by the desire to enjoy royal happiness, we are intent on killing our own kinsmen.



Bg 1.46
यदि मामप्रतीकारमशस्त्रं शस्त्रपाणयः।
धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे हन्युस्तन्मे क्षेमतरं भवेत्॥१-४६॥ 
yadi mām apratīkāram
aśastraṁ śastra-pāṇayaḥ
dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇe hanyus
tan me kṣemataraṁ bhavet

만약 드리타라슈트라의 아들들이 손에 무기를 들고서, 무장하지 않고 저항도 하지 않는 저를 죽인다면, 그것이 저에게는 차라리 낫겠습니다.

Word for word: 
yadi — even if; mām — me; apratīkāram — without being resistant; aśastram — without being fully equipped; śastra-pāṇayaḥ — those with weapons in hand; dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ — the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; raṇe — on the battlefield; hanyuḥ — may kill; tat — that; me — for me; kṣema-taram — better; bhavet — would be.

Translation: 
Better for me if the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, weapons in hand, were to kill me unarmed and unresisting on the battlefield.

संजय बोले (Sanjay Said):

एवमुक्त्वार्जुनः संख्ये रथोपस्थ उपाविशत्।
विसृज्य सशरं चापं शोकसंविग्नमानसः॥१-४७॥ 
sañjaya uvāca
evam uktvārjunaḥ saṅkhye
rathopastha upāviśat
visṛjya sa-śaraṁ cāpaṁ
śoka-saṁvigna-mānasaḥ

이렇게 말한 뒤, 깊은 슬픔에 잠겨 아르주나는 전쟁터 한복판에서 활과 화살을 내던지고 전차 바닥에 주저앉았습니다.

sañjayaḥ uvāca — Sañjaya said; evam — thus; uktvā — saying; arjunaḥ — Arjuna; saṅkhye — in the battlefield; ratha — of the chariot; upasthe — on the seat; upāviśat — sat down again; visṛjya — putting aside; sa-śaram — along with arrows; cāpam — the bow; śoka — by lamentation; saṁvigna — distressed; mānasaḥ — within the mind.

Translation: 
Sañjaya said: Arjuna, having thus spoken on the battlefield, cast aside his bow and arrows and sat down on the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with grief.
